Springtime fishing is in full swing right now in Charleston! Big trout are showing up in the rivers, and the reefs are loaded with high quality fish. Also, the bait is starting to show up off of the beach. We are gearing up for a great spring/summer bite.
The big trout that have been showing up are around deep drop offs and in the bends of creeks. My go-to has been shrimp under a popping cork with a long leader, sometimes 4-5 feet long. The outgoing tide has seemed to be the best this month when targeting the big trout.
The nearshore reefs have been producing significant numbers of sheepshead, weakfish, and black drum. On my recent trips to the reef, I have had a lot of success with live shrimp on jigheads for weakfish and black drum. The sheepshead have really been eating fiddler crabs and live shrimp. The key, lately, has been fishing directly over the structure. The times when we have been slightly off, we did not get a quality bite.
Thankfully, menhaden are starting to show up off the beach, which is a sight for sore eyes. This weekend we caught several nice bull redfish using live menhaden on the bottom. Spring is here and the fish are biting. Give me a call to get in on the action!
